MONARCHS vs PARLIAMENT

  • James 1st succeeded Elizabeth 1st on the throne
  • Divine right wasn't believed in until James 1st came to the throne
  • By 1625 Charles 1st succeeded his father James 1st
  • By 1628 Charles 1st badly needed money
  • Once he received money, Charles 1st dismissed parliament

ENGLISH CIVIL WAR

  • During the civil war James 1st and Charles 1st made enemies of the puritans
  • The large landowners and wealthy merchants were known as puritans
  • By 1640 Charles 1st needed more money to go to war with Scotland
  • In 1642 the puritans and Charles 1st started the civil war
  • In 1648 Charles 1st was defeated by Oliver Cromwell

GLORIOUS REVOLUTION

  • The commonwealth fell apart in 1658
  • During the revolution Charles 1st returned as king
  • Wealthy nobles landowners and merchants plotted against Charles 1st
  • In 1668 William led 14,000 soldiers in an invasion of England
  • William and Mary agreed to the English bill of rights
