Serfdom

  • Modified slavery.
  • Bonded to their masters.
  • In 1861, Tsar Alexander II abolished serfdom.
  • Could be sent to war by their master.

House life

  • Often stuffy, cramped, and dirty.
  • Multi-family houses.
  • Peasants lived in opposite standards of nobles.
  • Domestic violence was prevalent; men beat wives, pets, children.

Basics

  • Lowest class of citizens in Russian history.
  • Usually took the lowest paying jobs with longest shifts.
  • Even when considered "free" peasants struggled to survive.
  • Flu epidemic between 1918-1919: killed hundreds of thousands of peasants.

Women

  • Mainly used for reproduction and increased revenue.
  • Subjugated in their own homes. 
  • At a disadvantage because they were seen as a commodity. 
  • A widow could still possessed some property rights.
