WHAT IS IT?

  • Tierra del Fuego is a chain of islands
  • It is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland.

LOCATION

  • The Eastern part of Tierra del Fuego belongs to Argentina, and the the Western part belongs to Chile.

FACTS

  • The northern portion of the main island consists of glacial topography including lakes and moraines.
  • The southern and western parts contain parts of the Andes mountains.
  • The climate is normally cool in summer and cold in winter.

  • It was discovered by Ferdinand Magellan.
  • In 1945, Chile's only oil field was found here.
  • There are about 20 species of mammals and 90 species of birds here.
