PRESENTATION OUTLINE

A few notes about cells

Objectives

  • Understand function of ribosomes
  • Clarification: references to cell membrane
  • Understand the purpose of mitosis

Remember Thursday's Q. of the Day about the Golgi apparatus?

Protein synthesis starts at the ribosomes.

Ribosomes are found in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

(side note) Prokaryotes were the first type of organism to develop.

Ribosome location

  • Alone or in groups
  • Some attached to ER
  • Some attached to nuclear envelop

Cell membrane

  • Phospholipid bilayer
  • plasma membrane

Mitosis is the process during which one cell divides into to genetically identical cells.

Cancer cells divide much more quickly than normal cells.
