CATHY FREEMAN

BY ALANAH, OLIVIA & KATE

Cathy freeman way born in Slade point, Mackay, Queensland on the 16th February, 1973.

When Cathy was 14 years, she told her teachers that her aspiration was to win a gold medal in the Olympics. At her school, she had already held national records for 100, 200 and 400 metre sprints. Cathy did work experience as a hairdresser before winning a scholarship to Fairholme College.

In 1992 Cathy was employed as part of Australia Post’s Olympic Job Opportunities Program.
—“Being part of the workforce was a lot of fun and having a normal life really appealed to me. Somehow I knew that if my running took me to where I wanted to go, I wouldn’t have a normal life for much longer.”

For the 400m sprints, Cathy won a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics

In July 2003, Cathy Freeman officially announced her retirement. As an Aborigine, she is regarded as a role model for her people, and also seen by many as a symbol of national reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
