2. In a compound sentence

(With the words AND, OR, or BUT)

A compound sentence is a sentence that has two independent clauses.

An independent clause is a phrase that expresses a complete thought and has both a subject and a verb.

I read three books over Spring Break, but I did not enjoy any of them.

Jonathan, the boy sitting in the back of the classroom, was not paying attention during class.

4. After a dependent clause that starts a sentence

A dependent clause does not express a complete thought.

When I went running, I slipped on ice and broke my front tooth.

5. When using quotation marks
