Location of the capital    

  • Houston was too far East
  • Wanted a new capital
  • Respected Stephen F. Austin
  • Made new capital and named it austin

Lack of recognition as a nation state

  • No one accepted them for who they were
  • they were angry
  • They were finally recognized

How the issue of slavery will affect the annexation of Texas

  • the U.S. does not like slavery
  • texas does

Unrest within the army

  • many members of the army were angered at the way Texas was being run
  • They thought they could do better
  • President Houston finally settled the issue  

Conflicts with American Indian tribes

  • The texan land was on much of the indians land
  • The indians did not like this
  • Texans wanted to kill indians to gain more land
  • Houston did not like this
  • Houston protected the indians

 Debt

  • They were in a deep debt
  • U.S. did not have much money
  • They could not help
  • Texas needed more money
  • went further into debt

Border disputes with Mexico

  • Mexico wanted the most land 
  • Mexico wanted the most land 
  • Texas 
  • Texas wanted the most land
  • They finally agreed that the Rio Grande was border

Education system

  • There was no way to educate children
  • people felt the need for one
  • one was finally created in 1836
