SAHARA

  • It is 3.6 million square miles
  • The Sahara is Arabic for "The Great Desert".
  • The desert covers large sections of North Africa.
  • The Sahara’s northeasterly winds can reach hurricane level.

ZAMBEZI RIVER

  • The Zambezi is the fourth longest river in Africa.
  • It flows through six countries.
  • The source of the mighty Zambezi River lies at about 4 900ft above sea level
  • It is the longest east flowing river in Africa.

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

  • The mountain range stretches about 1,600 miles.
  • It is the highest mountain in the range, and in North Africa.
  • It's heightest point is 13,415 feet.
  • The range is home to the Berber people.

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

  • Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent.
  • It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
  • About 25,000 people attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro annually.
  • Many turn back because of altitude problems.

CONGO RIVER

  • Home to the goliath tigerfish.
  • The Congo River is the main transportation source in Central Africa.
  • It is the second longest river in Africa.
  • It is made up of over nine thousand miles of channels.

LAKE CHAD

  • It is a large, shallow lake in Africa.
  • It is 34 feet at its deepest point.
  • Provides water to more than 20 million people.
  • The Chari River provides over 90 percent of Lake Chad's water.

LIBYAN DESERT

  • It forms the northern and eastern part of the Sahara Desert.
  • It's area of about 1,100,000 square kilometers.
  • It is in about the shape of a rectangle.
  • The desert many different landscapes including mountains.

NILE RIVER

  • The longest river in the world.
  • The Nile is an "international" river.
  • The Nile is the primary water resource for Egypt and Sudan.
  • It has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile.
