ROCKS AND MINERALS

BY KATHI NAHOMI GARZA JOHNSON, FEBRUARY 25,2014

MINERALS

MINERALS ARE NATURAL SUBSTANCES MADE UP OF A SINGLE ELEMENT OR A COMPOUND OF ELEMENTS.

ROCKS

Rocks are formed from one or more minerals.

WHY ARE ROCKS AND MINERALS DIFFERENT.

ROCKS ARE MADE OF ONE MINERAL OR MORE,MINERALS ARE MADE UP OF A SINGLE ELEMENT .

WHAT ARE THE LAYERS OF THE EARTH?

The layers of the Earth are the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core.

DESCRIPTION OF MANTLE

  • The mantle is the layer located directly under the sima.
  • Mantle is the largest layer of the Earth (1800 miles thick)
  • The mantle is compose of very hot dense rock.
  • The mantle is very hot.

DESCRIPTION OF OUTER CORE

  • The outer core are so very hot
  • The metals that are in the outer core are all in the liquid state.
  • Earth's outer core is a liquid layer about 2,266 km (1,408 mi.)

DESCRIPTION OF INNER CORE

  • Earth's inner core is Earth's innermost part and is a primarily solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 km (760 mi).
  • The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together.
  • The inner core begins about 4000 miles beneath the crust and is about 800 miles thick.

WHAT ARE THE 3 PARTS OF THE EARTH CRUST

  • Mantle:The mantle is a part of a terrestrial planet or other rocky body large enough to have differentiation by density.
  • Inner core:Earth's inner core is Earth's innermost part and is a primarily solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 km, according to seismological studies.
  • Outer core:Earth's outer core is a liquid layer about 2,266 km thick composed of iron and nickel that lies above Earth's solid inner core and below its mantle.

4 THINGS THAT COULD CHANGE ROCKS

  • Erosion.
  • Wind.
  • Heat.
  • Pressure.
