Hermenn Oelrichs offered $500 to anyone who could prove a shark attacking humans.

In the shark attacks, 4 people were killed. Charles Vansent and Charles Bruder were fatally wounded. 11 year old Lester Stillwell was killed while swimming in Matawan Creek. Stanley Fisher was attacked while trying to rescue Lester. 12 year old Joseph Dunn was bitten on the leg but survived.

The 4 species of sharks that are known to attack humans are bull sharks, great white sharks, tiger sharks, and hammer head sharks.

Shark attacks are rare. Most sharks attack because they mistake us for seals and bigger fish.

Every year, at least 100 sharks are killed for their fins for shark fin soup. Isn't that sad!!!!

The place with the most shark attacks is Florida. It has an average of 30 attacks an year.

How to Avoid Shark Attacks

  • Always swim in a group.
  • Don't wander too far from shore.
  • Avoid swimming in the water if bleeding
  • Avoid swimming in the water at dawn, dusk or night
  • Don't wear shiny objects. They attract sharks.

  • Don't go into waters that have trash.
  • Avoid waters with of fish.
  • Don't go into waters with sharks.
  • Don't wear bright colored clothing.
  • Don't splash a lot.

  • Use care near steep drop offs
  • Don't relax because porpoises are nearby. They eat the same thing as sharks
  • Don't try to touch a shark.
  • If attacked, a general rule is "Do whatever it takes to get away"

  • Shark sink if they stop swimming.
  • There are more then forty species of sharks.
  • Whale sharks are huge, but they only eat plankton
  • Some sharks are as small as 8 inches and as big as 60 feet.
  • Sharks lose 500 teeth in thier lifetime.
