  • Born: Sept. 1766 Cumberland, England
  • Died: 1844
  • Born into poor Quaker family
  • Attended local Quaker school- learned reading, writing & arithmetic
  • Child Prodigy; began teaching at the local Quaker school at age 12

  • Taught at Manchester College
  • Joined Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society
  • Proposed his Atomic Theory in 1808

  • All Matter is made of atoms. Atoms are invisible and indestructible
  • All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties
  • Compounds are formed by a combo of 2 or more different kinds of atoms
