SHAMLEY GREEN

MY VILLAGE

HISTORY

  • Shamley Green, or Shamele as it was first referred to in a taxation list of 1332, started as a collection of small farms and houses forming an agricultural hamlet in the Parish of Wonersh.
  • There are two areas of public open space in the village, including one on which cricket has been played for over 160 years, and a number of commons.

ORIGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Small agricultural farms
  • It was used as a trading village, including a tannery and a gun powder mill.

GROWTH

  • To sustain a fairly isolated, self-sufficient, rural economy, small shops and artisan activities evolved. a tannery, based at Upper Lostiford water mill was made to turn cows hide into leather.

MODERN FUNCTIONS

  • It is still used today to grow crops, on the edge of the village.
  • Commuters come to live here because it's just outside of London and it's near to Guildford train station, which is a main line train station.
  • People also still play cricket on the green.
