Shamley Green, or Shamele as it was first referred to in a taxation list of 1332, started as a collection of small farms and houses forming an agricultural hamlet in the Parish of Wonersh.
There are two areas of public open space in the village, including one on which cricket has been played for over 160 years, and a number of commons.
To sustain a fairly isolated, self-sufficient, rural economy, small shops and artisan activities evolved. a tannery, based at Upper Lostiford water mill was made to turn cows hide into leather.
