• Founder and first ruler of the Han dynasty

• Politician and strategist
• Named Han dynasty after the Hanzhong fief

HAN WUDI

• After the burning of books at the end of the last dynasty:
• He encouraged books and had all leftover literature sent to the capital
• The old foreign policy was not working for the current empire
• To expand the empire, he launched attacks on the Xiongnu nomadic people
• They no longer had a main threat on the northern frontier

LAND AND REFORM

• In the first century most rural farms supported themselves
• They eventually became more dependant on trade w large estates
• Many peasants fell into debt so the government tried to fund them
• The gov was loosing money too fast trying to compete with large the estates
• They were taxed alot & the intervention in the private economy weakened the gov
