WHO INVENTED THE COTTON GIN?

The cotton gin was created by Eli Whitney. He invented it in 1793 and apllied for a patent on it in 1794. By 1807, it was time for the patent renewal, but many people had already made inventions very similar to that of the cotton gin.

WHY WAS THE COTTON GIN INVENTED?

Whitney created the cotton gin as a better, faster, and easier way to remove cotton seeds from cotton.

WHAT WAS THE ECONOMIC IMPACT

OF THE COTTON GIN?

-The production of cotton grew increasingly faster.
-It increased the demand for slaves, making production even faster.
-With the production increase, it made more money with the making of clothes made out of cotton, helping the economy.

WHAT WAS THE SOCIAL IMPACT

OF THE COTTON GIN?

It lead to increasing of slavery which impacted the slaves and their families

HOW DID THE COTTON GIN IMPACT

ON THE ENVIRONMENT?

As farmers in the south began to plant more and more cotton, the soil began losing most of it valuable nutrients.

TIMELINE

  • 1793 - Eli Whitney designs and builds the first cotton gin.
  • 1794 - Eli Whitney filed patent for the cotton gin.
  • 1794 - The first use of the cotton gin.
  • 1800 - The patent law changes
  • 1800 - Cotton production explodes in the South.

TIMELINE

  • 1802 - South Carolina purchases the cotton gin patent.
  • 1805- there was 146,290 cotton produced in the United States.
  • 1807 - Eli Whitney recieves his patent for the cotton gin.
