• The French clergy did not agree with pope Urban VI's reforms
• French cardinals elected a new pope which was Clement XII
• Clement XII lived in Avignon and Urban VI lived in Rome
• Each pope declared the other false and excommunicated one another
• They selected a new pope which made a total of three
