Doing a good bit of work for the non-profit community has given me opportunity to take advantage of many marketing practices from the for-profit world. The translation isn’t always 1:1 but there are quite a few parallels. While non-profits are not selling widgets, most have to fundraise so they are selling ideas for time and/or financial support. There is competition for each philanthropic dollar out there so marketing and communication is important to success. And when demand for a service increases, supply typically decreases so we have to learn how to build capacity and be efficient with resources to survive.
NON-PROFITS CAN TEACH US A LOT
However, I never really considered the reverse. What can businesses learn from the non-profit community? Turns out, quite a bit.
