SPONGES: phylum- Porifera

  • Sponges are the simplest form of invertebrates
  • Sponges have tiny opening in there bodies, that lead to canals that beat rapidly. The canals pump
  • water through the sponge and the sponges takes small food particles from the water to eat.
  • A sponge's outer layer or skeleton is made out of spicules to protect the sponge.
  • To reproduce, sponges grow buds and some grow egg cells that turn into larva when fertilized

CNIDARIANS-PHYLUM:CNIDARIA

  • All cnidarians have the ability to sting.Hydra tentacle stings are poisonous
  • All are carnivorous
  • They have 1 opening in their digestive system
  • They have no organs and just tissues, they have two cell layers.
  • To reproduce, Medusas grow buds that fall off and turn into larva when fertilized

FLATWORMS: PHYLUM-PLATYHELMINTHES

  • All have 1 opening in their digestive system and a nervous system
  • They live in freshwater lakes, ponds, and streams , and they stay out of light
  • They have sense organs in their head, that are attached to 2 nerve cords that go down its body
  • Eating: flat worms have a long tube in their body used to take in small food particles and push out waste
  • Reproduction:They have sex organs for mating and they can lay eggs. Their body parts grow back when cut off

ROUNDWORMS:PHYLUM-NEMATODA

  • Their muscles run length wise through their body
  • They have a nervous system with a brain and sense organs
  • They reproduce sexually using sex organs
  • Most are microscopic
  • Some are parasitic which means they survive by living in and feeding on another animal

SEGMENTED WORMS:PHYLUM-ANNELIDA

  • They have 2 sets of muscles, a circulatory system and a brain connected to a main nerve cord.
  • They have 5 tubes in their body that act as hearts.
  • They breathe oxygen through their skin and release carbon dioxide.
  • They take in food from the soil and their wastes help the soil.
  • When they mate both worms lay eggs that hatch if they are fertilized.

MOLLUSKS:PHYLUM-MOLLUSCA

  • They have a soft belly and no bones
  • All have a muscular foot or tentacles
  • There are 3 groups: Gastropods, Bivalves, and Cepholapods
  • All are carnivorous and have 2 openings in the digestive system
  • They lay eggs that develop into larvae that develop into adults when fertilized

ARTHROPODS:PHYLUM-ARTHROPODA

  • All have a jointed exoskeleton
  • They shed their exoskeletons and grow new ones
  • All have legs, digestive system with 2 openings and a circulatory system with a brain
  • They reproduce sexually and females lay fertilized eggs that young hatch from.

CRESTACEANS

  • They have 3 body segments
  • They have 2 sets of antennaes to sense their surroundings
  • Most of the time one Claw is larger than the other which is used for catching prey
  • They have 8 legs and 2 claws

ARACHNIDS

  • All have 8 legs
  • They have 2 body parts
  • Most live on land
  • They breathe through organs called book lungs
  • Most are carnivorous

INSECTS

  • They have 6 legs
  • They are the only invertebrates that can fly
  • All have 3 body parts
  • They breathe oxygen through air ducts on the sides of there body
  • They have 4 stages of life

ECHINODERMS:PHYLUM-ECHINODERMATA

  • They all live in the ocean and are carnivorous
  • They have an internal skeleton
  • All have spines sticking out from their bodies
  • They have tube feet.
  • They reproduce sexually, females release egg cells into the water and males release spurms

FISH:PHYLUM-CHORDATA

  • They have fins used for moving around in the water
  • They are cold blooded
  • Fish have a brain connected to sense organs and a digestive system with 2 openings
  • Fish breathe oxygen through gills. Their gills absorbs oxygen from the water into their blood
  • Fish reproduce sexually, Egg Layers lay eggs that get fertilized and hatch while Live Bearings deliver live babies

AMPHIBIANS:PHYLUM-CHORDATA

  • Their feet are adapted to where they live
  • Adults breathe in 3 different ways:Lungs,Skin and they can absorb oxygen through the top of their mouth
  • Their skin needs to be moist. If it became dry they would suffocate
  • Amphibians reproduce sexually . Eggs are fertilized already when they are laid. Once they are laid they
  • grow into tadpoles. Then they grow front legs. Finally some lose there their tail, but all grow back legs and lungs

REPTILES

  • They all have scales or plates
  • They are cold blooded
  • They have highly developed lungs
  • There are 4 main groups:Tuaturas,Turtles, crocodiles and alligators and lizards and snakes
  • Most reptiles lay fertilized eggs where the babies develop inside but some give live birth

BIRDS

  • Only animals with feathers, their down feathers keep them warm, their contour feathers are used for flying
  • They all are warm blooded, have a beak and lay eggs
  • They have well developed lungs for breathing oxygen
  • They have a strong, light skeleton with air spaces in them
  • Most eat 30 percent of their body weight in food for energy

MAMMALS

  • They are warm blooded
  • They are the only animals with hair or fur
  • There are 3 types: Montremes, Marsupials, Placentals
  • Most give birth to live young but Montremes lay eggs
  • All have mammary glands for feeding their young
