  • Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and geologist
  • He is best know for his contributions to evolutionary theory
  • He was enduring a medical course at Edinburgh
  • When then quit and investigated marine invertebrates
  • He went on to study at the university of Cambridge

HMS BEAGLE

  • Darwin was invited to join a voyage
  • A voyage to discover new species
  • The voyage lasted 5 years
  • Darwin became a famous geologist
  • Charles Lyell wrote a journal of the voyage

WHY IS DARWIN SO FAMOUS

  • Darwin noticed patterns of distribution of wildlife
  • He began detailed investigations in 1838
  • This is when he conceived his theory of natural selection
  • Although other geologists such as Alfred Russel Wallace has similar theories
  • In 1871 Darwin began examining human evolution and sexual selection

DARWINS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Darwin was honoured with a major ceremonial funeral
  • He was also buried in Westminster abbey, close to Isaac Newton
  • He has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history
