FACTS

  • Democrats met in Charleston, South Carolina for a national convention in 1860
  • The purpose of the national convention was to discuss the issue of popular sovereignty
  • Popular sovereignty is when a state can vote either to be a slave state or a free stat
  • At the meeting, the democrats spilt into two groups: the Northern and the Southern
  • At the same time, the republicans met in Chicago where they nominated Abraham Lincoln

FACTS

  • Because Lincoln promised the end to slavery, the South strongly opposed.
  • Therefore, not a single electoral vote came from them.
  • However, Lincoln managed to win.
  • A legislative session was called to debate on Georgia's secession
  • Secession is the act of pulling out of the Union.
