FEBRUARY 15, 1564 IN PISA ITALY

GALILEO WANTED TO BE A MONK

  • Galileo wanted to be a monk but his father chose to enroll him at the university of Pisa at the age of 17.
  • By 1584 he leaves university without a degree and works as a tutor.
  • But he goes back 4 years later and is appointed a professor at the university.
  • But his father dies in 1591 and he leaves the university to work as a professor at the university of Padua.

APPOINTED PROFESSOR

  • He stays at the university for 18 years until he is appointed a lifetime job as a professor
  • In those 18 years he invents an early thermometer,His first child, Virgina, is born, followed by
  • his second daughter Livia, measures supernova position indicating no parallax for the new star,
  • Then his first son, Vincenzo, is born in 1606 when Galileo is 42. In 1609 he invents and
  • improves upon a telescope.

BUSTED

  • In 1633 Galileo was placed under house arrest after being warned by the Catholic Church.
  • He was in trouble because he said that the earth wasn't the center of the universe and
  • For heresy.
  • His quote was "intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
  • Galileo believed that religion was based to much on structure and filled with corruption that went against all their teachings.

QUOTES

  • "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same god who has endowed us with sense, reason and
  • intellect has intended us to forgo their use." Think that means that if discover something that is true
  • you shouldn't be forced to say it's not true because it goes against what the bible says.

DIED

JANUARY 8, 1642 (AGE 77) IN ARCETRI ITALY
