• This memorial was mainly built from the idea of his fraternity-Alpha Phi Alpha-while in college.
• The project that was approved almost 15 years ago took almost 5 years to complete at a whopping $120 million.

• The monument is on the "Stone of Hope" which was carved from a boulder called "Mountain of Despair" names that came from Martin's: I Have a Dream Speech.

Interesting facts:

• The fact that the memorial seems incomplete symbolizes that King may have died too young.
• The entrance of the memorial is in between two large boulders which symbolize the "Mountain of Despair". As if pushed out, the big boulder named the "Stone of Hope" symbolizes the "push" of forward progress in civil rights.
• MLK is "looking" out toward the horizon and holding a paper in his hands, as if being defiant to injustice.

• The cherry blossoms that MLK is "looking" at is planted in a specific way and date for it to bloom on MLK's death anniversary which is April 4.
