Betsy was the eighth of seventeen children
Attended Quaker Schools
Met JoHn ross but he was anglican
They married in 1772; which was strictly off limits
They were expelled from the family and started their own business

John ross- the first husband of betsy; they started the upholstery business
Joseph ashburn-was a sailor but he was captured soon after they married
John claypoole-also a sailor but gave up his carrer to make betsy happy

THE LEGEND OF THE FLAG
Summer 1777 betsy received a visit from george washington
Washington and the continental army had a basic design
Betsy made the final design
Washington wanted stars with six points
Betsy argued that a five pount star was able to be perfectly cut

They paid her 15 pounds for sewing ship standards
However, other receipts have been found for multiple seamstresses

LATER LIFE
Betsy claypoole had five daughters
They all made flags, banners and other symbols
After the war was over for the new nation
She died at the age of 84 in 1836
