IEP TIP OF THE WEEK

justify changes made to the iep

If you reduce or increase services

  • At an Annual or Ammendment IEP, explain why such a change is needed

IEP TIP OF THE WEEK

  • If you propose increasing SAI, speech, OT, APE, behavioral intervention, or any other services - explain why and document it in the summary / Prior Written Notice format

Proposing A change

  • without an explanation makes an IEP lack in substantative appropriateness and fails to provide Prior Written Notice

EXAMPLE

  • The previous annual IEP offered two 30 min speech sessions
  • At the new annual IEP the speech model was changed to one 20 min session a week
  • No explanation was documented
  • When audited the IEP did not provide parents with an explanation / Prior Written Notice

Sample Reasons

  • An increase in behaviors warranted an increase in behavioral intervention services
  • Progress toward goals and increase in communication skills demonstrated in class warranted the decrease in speech services
