  • Alyoshka: many prisoners usually lose their religion when they enter a labor camp because they give up everything else so they feel as though religion isn't important. But, he held onto his religion which makes him a strong character.
  • Characters in this book represent a way of how to make a life in a horrible condition.

  • It suggests that society outside of the prison is insane and it isn't put together quite well.
  • The prison is isolated from society do it prevents the prisoners from being corrupted even more than they already are.
