LIFE OF ARES

• He was always disliked by his father Zeus
• He was abducted and kept in a bronze jar until Hermes released him
• He later moved in with Priapus, who taught him martial arts
• He was on the losing side of the Trojan War. Athena on winning
• Became god even though people didn't trust him they thought he was too dangerous

HONORING ARES

• Ares had a cult centered in northern Greece
• Thessaly, Thesprotia, and Thrake
• Honored with rites in times of war

WHAT IS ARES GOD OF?

• Ares was the god of war
• He presided over troop formation, rallying, and struggle of battle
• He was also the god of battlelust, violence, rage, and manliness

ARES IN THE TROJAN WAR

• Ares joined the Trojans which made the other gods mad
• Athena was on the Greeks side and knocked him out with a large rock
• Later in the war, Athena wounded Ares
• He shook the earth with a loud bellow
• He then complained to Zeus but was ignored
