Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. It is an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant.

Bob's Rings
Bob's rings show wealth, power, and strength. By using his rings it gives him power over Ponyboy and the other greasers. The rings would do a lot of damage to The greasers face in a fight.

Who it effects
Bobs rings would effect the greasers. The greasers would be scared in a fight against bob because of his rings.

Sunsets
The sunsets reflect how Cherry and Ponyboy are starting to patch the holes between the socs and the greasers. Sunsets are one of the many things that Cherry and Ponyboy have in common.

The sunsets effect cherry and Ponyboy also the other socs and greasers, because the two of them are trying to patch the hole between the socs and greasers and the two groups don't want that.

Chocolate Cake
Is a symbol of the Curtis boys. The cake symbolizes the boys loss of their parents. On page 88 ponyboy, says "all three of us like chocolate cake for breakfast. Mom never allowed it with ham and eggs, but Darry let soda talk him into it." This also symbolizes Darry's desire to take away any pain from the loss.

Who it effects
This would effect the brothers because this is something that is so close to them it reminds them of their mom and dad.

Soda-pop's horse Mikey-mouse
Sodas horse symbolizes innocence. Mikey Mouse, connects the boys with their youth, soda enjoyed Mickey as a young boy and still does. When Mickey mouse was sold soda was devastated.

Who it effects
This would effect Darry, Ponyboy, and Soda. I felt like it would effect soda more because he was so attached to mickey mouse.

The church
The church was a safe place for Ponyboy and Johnny to go after they committed a crime. The church was a place were they could be their selfs. When the church was burning down Ponyboy and Johnny showed their real colors in helping the kids in the back room out of the church.

Who it effects
This would effect Johnny and Ponyboy because this is like their place were they can be free be their selfs.

Madras shirts
These shirts show that the socs are rich, preppy, stuck-up. The leather jackets on the greasers show how tough and hardworking they are.

From reading only 1/4 of the book I can tell that there is so much more action to come. I love this book it symbolizes the difference between two groups but is starting to come together because of two people.
