OPRAH WINFREY

Oprah Winfrey is one of America's most well-known talk-show hosts and billionaires, but she is also known for her acting, producing, publishing, & charitable work.

Oprah Winfrey was born to two unmarried teenagers in Kosciusko Mississippi and was raised by her grandmother until age 6.

She then moved to Milwaukee to live with mother, who didn't take necessary care for her. Oprah then moved to Nashville, where she flourished academically due to her fathers strict, but secure parenting. She became an honor student and received a full ride to Tennessee State. She later
left school when she got her first on-air job.

In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore and became a co-anchor for WJZ-TV. While there, co-hosted her first talk show called People Are Talking. Eight years later, she was asked to host the WLS-TV's AM Chicago. After giving the show's ratings a major boost, it was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, and it soon became the #1 talk-show in America.

While her hosting career flourished, her acting career took off as well. She performed in films such as The Color Purple and Native Son. These performances earned her nominations for Oscars and Golden Globes. Her passion for dramatic arts motivated her to form her own production company, Harpo Productions, Inc., which made her the first woman in history to own and produce her own talk show.

In 1993, Oprah interviewed Michael Jackson, earning her over 100 million viewers. Also, Winfrey began her own television book club, called Oprah Book Club, in 1996, where she interviewed famous authors such as Maya Angelou. Oprah's business career began as she co-founded Oxygen Media, Inc. and published three magazines: O, O At Home, and The Oprah Magazine, as well as authored 5 books of her own. In 2003, Oprah was listed as the first black black woman to be a billionaire. Throughout the years, Oprah has founded & supported many charities.

Oprah Winfrey has earned her fame & fortune by her words, books, business, performance, and philanthropy. From her massive earnings, she owns seven houses around the country and has donated millions to several charities and foundations. Oprah has highly influenced America and the world with her books, magazines, and fluent talk show hosting. Oprah continues to share her experiences and opinions with the world, changing lives everyday.
