PRESENTATION OUTLINE

How to translate a latin story!

Alexandra Alberta

Here are some tips!

  • Locate the subject in the sentence.
  • Identify what form the verb is.
  • Is it active or passive? What tense is it?
  • Check for clues of a subjunctive clause.
  • Never translate in the order of the Latin words!

When figuring out the meaning of a word...

  • Check for context clues.
  • Keep trying to figure it out!
  • Look back through old translations for the word.
  • If it's a verb, make sure you have the correct tense.
  • If you can't figure it out, check the dictionary, or ask magistra.

Here are some examples...

  • Miser servus totiens a domino verberatur ut capiti valde nocuerit.
  • The subject is the slave.
  • The verb is perfect active tense SUBJUNCTIVE (sentence is result clause).
  • Translation: The miserable slave was beaten so many times by the master...
  • that his head was now injured.

If i didn't know what one of the words meant...

  • I could have used context clues,
  • or whatever else i could have to figure it out.

Hope this helped!

Thank you :)
