Verrazzano started his voyage in January of1524. With 50 crew members on board, he sailed from Madeira, Spain. On March 1, 1524 he reached Cape Fear, North Carolina. In July of 1524 he returned to France. In 1528 he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Caribbeans. He landed on the island Guadeloupe.
Verrazzano was hired and sponsored by the French king because France wanted to find the "Northwest Passage" to Asia. They wanted to find spices, silk, and other riches.
When Verrazzano landed on Guadeloupe, he thought the natives were friendly. Instead he encountered the Caribs who were cannibals. They killed and ate him.
