PRESENTATION OUTLINE
"Spirits fled to the great battle to die
Italy broke its alliance and left without a trail"
Spirits,or soldiers, were sent to the great battle, which is what citizens called World War I, to die because it was such a violent and terrible war. Italy broke its alliance with the Triple Alliance and joined the Allies because they thought Germany had started the war unjustly.
"Peace treaties existed as only a lie
Negotiation upon negotiation were not anything but a fail"
The countries had developed treaties to maintain peace but they existed as a lie because no one really followed them or believed they would last. Negotiations failed because countries could not come to an agreement over various arguments.
"As the plans failed, Wilhelm II forced Bismarck to resign
Reinforcements drowned any and all hope of the Schlieffen plan"
Ottovan Bismarck had tried to prevent the war but when that did not go as planned, Kaiser Wilhelm II forced him to resign as chancellor of Germany. The Schlieffen plan was created by General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen of Germany. It had Germany battle France then quickly cross the country to battle with Russia. It did not go as planned because they lost to France and Russia invaded before they had enough reinforcements.
"Soldiers stood tall on the line
And as the shots fired, the soldiers ran"
Soldiers stood tall on the line, the line being a trench. As the shots fired from their commanders gun signaling them to go, the soldiers ran into no mans land to try and attack the enemy.
"The Allies and Central Powers battled it out
Italy switched sides in hope of becoming the victor"
The Allies consisted of Italy, Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and later the United States. They were fighting against the Central Powers which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. Italy was originally allied with the Central Powers back when they were known as the Triple Alliance but had switched sides because they felt Germany had started the war unjustly and did not want to be apart of them.
"German soldiers became hopeless and wandered about
General Schlieffen became crueler and stricter"
German soldiers were becoming hopeless when things were not working out for the Central Powers. General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen became crueler and stricter after his plan failed because he did not want to lose again.
"Values and morals went down the drain
Lies and secret treaties built treacherous towers"
Values and morals kind of declined during the war because everyone was so focused on winning and not dying. Some countries had created treaties with other countries without telling their allies which created tension and left everyone feeling like they could not trust one another.
"The battle of Marne and Somme brought only misery and pain
All was at stake for the Great Powers"
The battle of Marne and the battle of Somme was Germany against France and Great Britain. They brought misery and pain because so many soldiers were wounded or killed. All was at stake for the Great Powers, which consisted of Italy, France, Russia, Great Britain, Germany, and Austria-Hungary., because they were using all of their resources for this war.
