BIOGRAPHY

  • Born December 10, 1805 in Newburyport
  • When he was 3 years old his father left his family
  • Helped form the antislavery society
  • Created a newspaper called the liberator
  • Wanted to abolish slavery throughout the civil war

SIGNIFICANCE IN US HISTORY

  • Joined the American colonization society
  • He heald the view that African Americans should be move to the west coast of Africa.
  • 1831 he began publishing antislavery newspaper named Liberator
  • He said, "On this subject I do not wish to think, or speak, or write with moderation...I will not excuse-I will not retreat a single inch-AND I WILL BE HEARD."
  • In 1832 he held form the New England antislavery society
