Well, as it turns out, “Retail Art Director” isn’t necessarily a universal term for a particular kind of visual artist, but rather there are quite a few titles for people who do mostly the same kind of work. This includes Retail Creative Director, Retail Store Design Director, and Visual Merchandising Director as well as Retail Art Director. All of these people do very similar, if not the same, kind of work.
Regardless of specific title, these designers are in charge of a retail store’s visual identity, from the store design, to marketing material and signage. Some may focus or specialize in a specific are (such as store design), but ultimately they oversee their design departments.
So, What skills does a Retail Art Director need?

Many Retail Art Directors hold a bachelors or masters degree in art, photography, graphic design, interior design, and/or marketing.
