ETHNICITIES

  • Berbers- a member of an indigenous people of North Africa
  • Phoenicians- ancient civilization on the western, coastal part of the Fertile Crescent and centered on the coastline
  • Romans- on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 8th century BC
  • Arabs- primarily inhabiting Western Asia, North Africa, and parts of the Horn of Africa

WARS

  • Algerian war- war between France and Algerian independence. (1954-1962)
  • Sand war- occurred along the Algerian Moroccan border in October 1963.
  • Algerian Civil war- armed conflict between Algerian goverment and various islam rebel. (1991-2002)

AGRICULTURE

  • More than four-fifths of the land uncultivable.
  • Winter grains—wheat, barley, and oats
  • Tobacco, olives, and dates are important crops, as are sorghum, millet, corn, rye, and rice
  • Many scattered herds of cattle, goats, and sheep, and stock raising

EDUCATION

  • Begun by French colonists who forced school-going Algerian children.
  • Schools were not widespread and only a small minority was able to receive this education
  • In 2003, only 70 percent of the population was literate.
  • Algerian law states that all children aged 6-15 must attend school.
