This is the time to get involved

  • Sharing personal data
  • Monitor online use
  • Once they go to high school ..
Talk to your child about sharing personal data

Its never okay to share phone number or address online

Tell them you will be monitoring their online use

Be honest with them tell them you will be....

Check their phone, computer, and or ipad
Look at history, chats etc tell them what is okay and not okay, discuss it with them.

Once in high school they will not let you in
Now is the time to teach them appropriate use

Privacy Settings

  • Every app has privacy settings
  • Social Media has privacy settings
  • Can be hacked
  • Block users
  • Report users that are abusive
Every app has privacy settings...look for them

Social Media has privacy settings

Just because they are private doesn't mean others can't get in

Block users that are abusive and talk about why with your child

Report users that are abusive.

Rules of the Road

  • Choose wisely
  • Don't hide
  • Think about what you see
  • Be smart, be safe
Choose wisely- Not all content is appropriate. you know what we mean.

Don't hide-Using anonymity to cloak your actions doesn't turn you into a trustworthy, responsible human being

Think about what you see- Just because it's online doesn't make it true.

Be smart, be safe. Not everyone is who they say they are. But you know that.

Rules of the Road

  • Guard your privacy
  • Protect your reputation
  • Nothing is private online
  • Assume everyone is watching
  • Apply the Golden Rule
Rules to discuss with your child

Guard your privacy- What people know about you is up to you

Protect your reputation- self-reflect before self-reveal. What's funny today could cost you tomorrow.

Nothing is private online- anything you do or say can be copied, pasted and sent to gazillions of people without your permission

Assume everyone is watching- If someone is your friend's friend, they can see everything

Apply the Golden Rule- If you don't want it done to you, don't do it to someone else.

  • Context is everything
  • Double check before you hit "send"
  • Take the high road
  • Grammar rules
  • Keep a secret
Context is everything- If kids want to have silly online names that conform to the convention of an online community fine but for school communication they should have a respectable screen name (not their real name).

Double check before you hit"send". Could something you wrote be misinterpreted? Is it rude, mean or sarcastic...don't send.

Take the high road- Chatting, texting and status updates are all in the moment communication. But if there's an escalating sense of rudeness, sign off.

Grammar Rules_ Public online comments or a note to a teacher should represent your best self. This applies to capital letters and writing in all capitals
Keep a secret- If you think something might embarrass someone, get them in trouble , compromise their privacy keep it to yourself or delete it..

  • Don't hide
  • Remember the Golden Rule
Don't hide- need to have untraceable screen names but don't use it to hurt people.

Golden Rule- Don't say something online that you wouldn't say to someones face...in fact you can actually take that a step further. If you do have something negative to say, discussing it in person is a better way to resolve your issues.
