Purpose of a Nutrient

  • to provide energy
  • to provide materials for making chemicals that the body needs to make cells and other parts of the body

Carbohydrates

  • made of Carbon(C), hydrogen(H), oxygen(O)
  • atoms of these molecules are linked together to form sugar (mostly glucose)--->starch
  • Example of Sugar is cellulose

Fats

  • Made from C, H and a few atoms of O
  • Two kinds of fat:
  • Solid: Ex. Lard (animal fat)
  • Liquid: Ex. Palm Oil (plant fat)

Proteins

  • Made from C.H,O,N
  • some also have Sulfur
  • Atoms form to make amino acids
  • Chains of amino acids form proteins
