MILITARY

  • Sparta was centered on war culture.
  • Many citizens are only allowed 1 ocupation, solider.
  • Boys start their training age 7.
  • Teenage boys who demonstrate leadership are selected for Crypteia.
  • Crypteia is a secret police force whose goal is to get rid of helot troublemakers.

SPARTAN WOMEN

  • Spartan women are known for being independent-minded, and enjoyed many freedoms and power.
  • Spartan women were not in the military but recieved a formal education separate from boys.
  • To attract men, women engaged in athletic competions including javelin-throwing and wrestling.
  • Spartan women were allowed to own and manage property.
  • They did not have to take care of the other responsibilities such as cooking and cleaning which helots handled.

MARRIAGE

  • Marriage is very important to Spartans.
  • The state put pressure on people to have male children for soliders.
  • Men who delayed marriage were publicly shamed.
  • But those who fathered many sons were rewarded.
  • Spartan women had to shave their heads in preparation for marriage.
