  • James Buchanan: I was happy that I won, but immediate issues followed
  • Enslaved person: I have the right to be free, the doctor lived in an
  • area where slavery was illegal, so I should have freedom!

  • Roger B. Taney: Scott should not be free, he should not be
  • allowed to sue in federal court because African Americans
  • are not citizens, and living in free property did not make
  • an enslaved person free.
