How to take care of your telomeres

What are telomeres?

  • Telomeres are protective caps found at the end of a strand of DNA that prevent your DNA from fraying and sticking together.

What do telomeres do?

  • Telomeres shorten each time a strand of DNA divides
  • When a telomere reaches a certain shortness, the DNA either dies or enters into a state of dormancy

My Question

  • I wanted to know what external factors decrease the length of your telomeres?
  • I also wanted to know what an individual can do to address these problems.

How do you keep your telomeres long?

  • Based on the information I found I have created a health plan including the following catagories: diet, stress relief, and exercise

Diet

How to change your diet to save your telomeres

Diet: Daily

  • To keep your telomeres as long as possible research suggests that a Mediterranean diet can help preserve telomeres

Diet: Weekly

  • Eating a balanced diet and the right quantity of food can also help you lose weight and boost your immune system
  • Having an extreme amount of stress this week? Believe it or not diet can also help with stress managment

Diet: Monthly

  • Make sure that you eat foods from a variety of foods groups

Diet: Yearly

  • Eating organic foods may help save your telomeres

Exercise

How being more fit can help your telomeres 

Exercise: Daily

  • At least 30 minutes of exercise daily can benefit a persons overall health and help your imune system

Exercise: Weekly

  • An average amount of exercise per week can also help reduce stress which also helps your body

Exercise: Monthly

  • The more you can vary the muscles you are exercising the better
  • Each muscle has a unique role in maintaining your health

Exercise: Yearly

  • As you exercise more your body begins to gain a routine of recovery and cell replacement

Stress Relief

How managing your stress can befit your health 

Stress Relief: Daily

  • Getting a sufficient amount of sleep can help reduce stress
  • Also a healthy diet and a valid amount of exercise can help reduce stress

Stress Relief: Weekly

  • Making lists and having a high level of organization in multiple aspects of life is helpful to reduce stress

Stress Relief: Monthly

  • Having a reasonable amount of sociality in life also benefits health

Stress Relief: Yearly

  • Make sure you adress abnormal amounts with the proper remady
  • The amount of stress you have can change what you need to do to manage that stress

What I learned

  • I learned that there are many aspects that shorten your telomeres
  • But the good news is that there are also lots of ways that you can lengthen your telomeres

Conclusion

  • Telomeres may only be part of the aging process but taking better care of your telomeres leads to better health all around
