BATTLE OF MARATHON

BY LEO MALKIN

The battle of Marathon took place on either September or August 12th, 490 b.c., and was fought by the Persians and the Athenians. It took place in the Greek city of Marathon.

The Athenians were vastly outnumbered. The Athenians had around 10,000 warriors (mostly made up of residents of the city-state) whereas the Persians had more than 20,000 warriors.

For about five days, the armies squared off, showing no signs of movement. Finally, the Greek commander, Miltades, decided to attack. They advanced to the Persian camp, and the Persians rushed into position.

As the Persians attacked, they pursued the center of the Greek's mass of soldiers, but quickly found themselves to be surrounded. The Persians managed to escape, losing seven ships and around. 7,000 soldiers.

Although they were vastly outnumbered, the Greeks managed to lose only 200 men, and win the battle.
