HISTORY The Bald Head Island [BHI] lighthouse, better know own as Old Baldy,was built in 1817.This lighthouse is the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina. It served as a lighthouse at the mouth of the cape fear, Atlantic & intrecoastal waterway meet. Old Baldy was built for sailors that entered the Cape Fear river. To get to the top of Old Baldy You Need to climb 108 steps and 5 landings, but you need climb a ladder to get in the light. Also in 1813 the first light of BHI got knocked down because of fear of erosion. The second light of BHI was built and completed in 1817.

WHY IS OLD BALDY FAMOUS Old Baldy is famous because it is the oldest standing lighthouse in NC. Also, Stede Bonnet [famous pirate] was caught near were Old Baldy is standing. Alot of people go to Old Baldy because of its history. Hurricane Fran made its way thru the southern coast of NC on September 5, 1996. Many islanders cramed into Old Baldy for protection. It with stod the storm with little repair needed. Also, it with stod a 1883 hurricane that sank one-hundred vessels.
CHARACTERISTICS Ever wonder why Old Baldy looks the way it does? Well it looks the way it does because it was abandoned and sometimes people put on a different color of stucco or plaster and eventually was brown, tan, white & gray. This may sound crazy but Old Baldy is octagonal. Old Baldy is 110' tall. Also, it is deactivated.
