Stage process

There are many ways one
Can go about designing lighting. Most who work with lights tend to develop their own method. Most methods include anticipating what a theatre has available.

You must also consider what kind of play your lighting for. If it's a tragedy you could use blue or purple. It is generally recommended that you read over the play many times

Ideas must be flexible to change. Aside from this depending on who you are the methods can vary.

Aladdin

This lighting is from Aladdin, The Broadway production. And includes the use of front light. Fog and spotlight. The stars are fiber optics. The moon probably has bright lights inside it. The lighting manager is responsible for all of this.

The Lion King.

The backdrop is likely translucent and is illuminated by a large light behind it. Giving a warm affect. It is probably made of battens and silk.

Phantom of the Opera

The candles and fog create a mood of mystery. There is a spotlight on both the actors.

How does the light designer communicate with his team and the director? With a lighting plot, and passing information.

What do they use in their process? Obviously they use lights like the ellipsoidal which has a strong light throw, Fresnels which have a shorter throw, and scoops that have flood light.

Other lights include spot lights and strip lights.
Cables and connectors are your energy transfer material. Basically, they are cords and connectors.

Gels and Gobos. Gels change the color of the light, and can create a mood. Gobos create shapes of light. You can specially create your own.

There are also computer control boards and monitors. You can time them to give a light at a certain time. They control the lights. How dim/bright, long it lasts, etc.

The first stage is initial conception, this is when they read over the production, and have an idea of what they want to do!

The next stage is watching the actors do the run-throughs and changing the plan accordingly. Fun fact: there's only two stages.

They take the emotions of the real world, and production, and that inspires them to create their own lighting.

FUN FACTS

  • Colored lights can create mood
  • You can design your own Gobos
  • Ellipsoidals are the most common light
  • LED fixtures are the least common light
