ROMAN ART The Romans made sculptures of their emperors and important men. Today we have monuments and sculptures of our leaders such as Abraham Lincoln. We also adopted Frescoes from the Romans. They painted three dimensional landscapes on to walls and ceilings. These can be seen painted on ceilings in government buildings and in the Sistine Chapel.
The Romans built great buildings and large structures. One of these is the arch. The Romans used them as doorways. We have arches that structure bridges and are also sometimes used as doorways. The Romans also used aqueducts. These little tunnels allowed water to go directly to people's houses. Now, we have indoor plumbing and sewer systems.
Language We use the Roman form of writing and speaking in many ways. We use Roman numerals as a form of counting. We also have roots and prefixes that come from Latin roots. Many English words such as international and animal mod from Latin roots.
PHILOSOPHY AND LAW Some Romans adopted stoicism, which originated in Greece. It meant that the only true thing in life was to have good character and virtues like self-control. The Stoics believed in justice, which fit very well in the concept of Roman law. Our government is based on freedom and justice. People have rights, but not so many that the country turns chaotic. Judges in Rome tried to make fair decisions , judging by the crime or action. People get fair judgement today, and get sentenced for a fair amount of time according to the crime.
