CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR

  • Slavery- with only half the states supporting slavery it caused sectionalism and violence in Congress
  • Abraham Lincoln- his election was a threat to the south both economically and politically
  • State vs Federal Rights- two sides formed, one arguing for states rights and the other for more control in the federal government

The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. The Confederates won this battle. Union: "We are better than the South." Confederates: "That was a fluke."

The Battle of Antietam was fought in Maryland in 1862. This was the bloodiest days of the Civil War. The Union won this battle.

  • July 1-July 3, 1863
  • Union Victory
  • Turning point in the civil war
  • Largest number of deaths

THE BATTLE OF VICKSBURG

  • May 18th-July 4th,1863
  • Union Victory
  • The North controlled the Mississippi River
  • This cut the South in half

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • Issued January 1, 1863
  • Maintained the freedom of ex-slaves
  • Freed the slaves in the ten rebelled states
  • Not a law passed by congress
  • "Thanks Abe."

  • One of the last battles in the war
  • Triggered a series of surrenders
  • "It's all over."
