Expect the Challenge

  • Problem 1 : Under- prepared.
  • Start with confidence: you can succeed, College is not 13 Grade.
  • Example: Most of your work in HS is done in class

Class work VS out-of-class work

  • Most of your work in Higher Ed. is done outside the class 1 to 3
  • Instructors expect you to be motivated and know what to do and how to do it.

What is the Purpose of Higher Education?

  • Publicly supported Higher ED : Improve Society
  • Educate Citizens : democracy depends on that.
  • Jobs and careers
  • Realize that it isn't the only purpose!

What is the value of Higher Ed.?

  • How are you going to be different at the completion of your degree
  • Earning Power = likely to earn more money
  • Employ-ability = the higher your degree the less likely you'd be umployed

  • Value of creativity = try to be creative worker
  • Work change : some disappear and some re-appear.
  • Agency : you feel that you are in charge of your life
  • It gives meaning, fulfillment and enjoyment

  • Should you work while you are in college considere:
  • Where is the job? in/off campus
  • Do you have to drive to the job?
  • Do you need the income?

Take Responsability

  • When in college there are new structures:
  • who will do your landry?
  • who will wake you up in the morning?
  • Discipline is the key :) Make your own schedule

Was there class today?

  • Do you have to go to class?
  • Specific attendance policy? Read the syllabus!
  • Go to class because the more you go to class the higher your grade.
  • Many things are in the lecture and NOT in the text book

  • Talk in class during the lecture
  • Use electronic devices
  • Sleep in class
  • Read the newspaper or do other work
  • Do not worry about arriving on time
  • Leave early
  • Start shuffling your papers and closing your books near the end of class

  • Faculty is usually busy
  • they do enjoy teaching and would reach out to students
  • Use all etiquette to contact faculty
  • Do contact your faculty!!! it's important!

Get to Know Other Students

  • One of the most exciting and anticipated aspects of college is the unique opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. This networking with fellow classmates can help broaden your perspective and help develop personal and professional relationships for many years to come.
