  • Confederates pushed union army back
  • This battle showed it would not be easy to win

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM.

  • The battle was on September 17 ,1862.
  • Was the bloodiest one day battle in history.

BATTLE OF SHILOH

  • Both sides lost and gained land
  • The battle took two days
  • Helped the union control part of the Mississippi

SIEGE OF VICKSBURG

  • Lasted six weeks
  • Instead of attacking directly they cut the city off
  • Hunger made confederates surrender

CLARA BARTON.

  • Many women like Clara Barton volunteered medical care
  • Formed the American Red Cross

  • The confederates wanted to win a battle on northern soil
  • Over half of the confederates were killed
  • On November 19, 1863 Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address
