John Steinbeck grew up in Salinas, California. He was an avid reader thanks to his mother a school teacher. He also excelled in sports, especially track and basketball. Steinbeck also decided his future to be a writer at a young age, 14.
John Steinbeck was raised by his mother, Olive and father, John Sr. He also grew up with three sisters. Once older he had gotten married three times and had two sons along the way, Thomas and John.
After dropping out of Stanford, Steinbeck made a go at being a freelance writer. Next he moved to New York City and found work as a newspaper reporter and construction worker. Next he went back to California becoming a caretaker of Lake Tahoe. During this time he wrote his first novel it he did not become a serious/well-known author until three years later with "Tortilla Flat".
John Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902, and died December 26, 1968 from a heart attack. He dropped out of college when he decided it was not for him John Steinbeck published his first book in 1929 and published "The Pearl" in 1947.
