Compromise of 1850
January 21, 1850
Attempted to bring new states into the Union.
Angered both northerners and southerners even more over the topic.
Fugitive slave act
1850
Required northerners to help run away slaves. Made northerners mad because they didn't want to support slavery
Uncle Tom's Cabin
1851
Harriet Beahcer Stowe had a dream that portrayed a slave being whipped to death by his owner.
This caused more people to sympathize slaves and become abolitionists.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
1854
Abolished the Missouri Compromise and gave Missouri and Nebraska the choice of wether to be a free or slave state. This made Northerners angry.
Bleeding Kansas
May 21-23 1856
A pro-slavery town destroyed a anti-slavery town. The five people that led the rebellion were killed and many were captured.
Dred Scott Decision
1857
The court decided that Dred Scott wasn't free even though he had lived in and traveled in free states. Slaveholder's were happy while Northerners were outraged.
Harper's Ferry
1859
Planned to raid a place with weapons to arm slaves for a rebellion. The rebellion failed and everyone that participated that was either killed or captured. The last words of the leader made Southerners uneasy.
Election of 1860
1860
President Lincoln is elected with only 40% of the votes. The south no longer had enough power in Congress to protect slavery.
