IGNEOUS

  • formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
  • Over 700 types of igneous rocks have been classified

BASALT

  • The basalt rock is very fine grained.
  • It is black like the Obsidian rock but is not shiny

OBSIDIAN

  • the obsidian rock is "glassy" and looks very smooth.
  • It has a shiny look to it and is all black

GRANITE

  • the granite rock is made up of many different crystal like objects
  • It is a mix of white, grey, and black

METAMORPHIC

  • They arise from the transformation of existing rock types
  • Metamorphic rocks are created by an alteration by heat and pressure

GNEISS

  • Gneiss is the parent rock of granite
  • Gneiss has multiple colors
  • It is fine grained

SCHIST

  • Schist is the parent rock of slate
  • Schist is a variation of colors
  • It is coarse grained

SLATE

  • Slate is the parent rock of shale
  • Slate is sleek and black

QUARTZITE

  • Quartzite is the parent rock of sandstone
  • It is reddish and fine grained

MARBLE

  • Marble is the parent rock of limestone
  • It is white and has many crystals

SEDIMENTARY

  • formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water.
  • sedimentary rocks are estimated to be only 8% of the total volume of the crust

  • Is made from evaporated salt water
  • Consists of mainly salt

LIMESTONE

  • formed from tiny pieces of shells of dead sea animals
  • It is fine grained

CONGLOMERATE

  • composed of large, rounded particles.
  • It is coarse grained

SHALE

  • composed of flat layers of silt and clay, usually holding organic materials.
  • It is fine grained

SANDSTONE

  • composed of sand-sized grains of mineral, rock or organic material.
  • It is fine grained
