A

  • A is for air mass
  • A large volume of air that has nearly the same temperature and humidity at different locations at the same altitude
  • Maritime tropical air masses (mT), continental polar air masses (cP), ect.

B

  • B is for barometer
  • An instrument that measures air pressure in the atmosphere
  • The barometer read 990 so we may get rain.

C

  • C is for cell
  • The smallest unit that is able to perform the basic functions of life
  • Plants and animals are multicellular, while bacteria is unicellular

D

  • D is for data
  • Information gathered by observation or experimentation
  • According to our data it rained ten inches this week

E

  • E is for electromagnet
  • A magnet that consists of a piece of iron or steel inside a coil of current-carrying wire
  • Doors, cars, stereos, phones and more all have electromagnets in them

F

  • F is for fulcrum
  • A fixed point around which a lever rotates
  • The fulcrum on the see-saw broke

G

  • G is for germiantion
  • The beginning growth of a new plant from a spore or seed
  • We made sure the plant had the right conditions to germinate

H

  • H is for humidity
  • The amount of water vapor in the air
  • The humidity in Rock Hill was 72% on Wednesday

I

  • I is for imprinting
  • Instincts that animals are born with and cannot reverse
  • Baby ducks recognize the first thing they see as their mother

J

  • J is for jet stream
  • A wind that flows in the upper troposphere from west to east over vast distances at great speeds
  • The jet stream was going 75 mph

K

  • K is for kinetic energy
  • The energy of motion
  • The roller coaster going down the long hill has kinetic energy

L

  • L is for lever
  • A solid bar that rotates, or turns, around a fixed point
  • Examples of levers are gardening hoes, baseball bats, crowbars, and wheelbarrows

M

  • M is for magnet
  • An object that attracts certain other materials, particularly iron and steel
  • Refrigerators, motors, cars, cabinet latches and computers all have magnets in them

N

  • N is for newtons
  • the International System of Units derived unit of force
  • Forece is measured in newtons on a spring scale

O

  • O is for Ozonosphere
  • The ozone layer refers to a region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun's UV radiation
  • If we mistreat our planet then we'll brake the ozone layer

P

  • P is for pulley
  • A wheel with a grooved rim that turns on its axle
  • Blinds, car engines, and DVD trays all have pulleys

Q

  • Q is for qualitative observation
  • Detailed descriptions of what is seen
  • Colors, shapes, and sometimes sizes are qualitative observations

R

  • R is for radiation
  • Energy that travels across distances in the form of electromagnet waves
  • Fires radiate heat

S

  • S is for spring scale
  • a balance that measures weight by the tension on a helical spring
  • The spring scale read 10 newtons

T

  • T is for transpiration
  • The movement of water vapor out of a plant and into the air
  • The water from the plant traveled to a cloud and was later rained back down to Earth

U

  • U is for ultraviolet radiation
  • Radiation of higher frequencies than visible light
  • The ozone layers protect us form these rays

V

  • V is for vertabrate
  • An animal with an internal backbone
  • Dogs, cats, birds, and ducks are vertabrates

W

  • W is for wind direction
  • The direction of which the wind is blowing
  • The wind direction is southeast

X

  • X is for xylem
  • the vascular tissue in plants that conducts water and dissolved nutrients upward from the root and also helps to form the woody element in the stem
  • The xylem in the plant helped it grow big and strong

Y

  • Y is for y-axis
  • the secondary or vertical axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates
  • The y-axis showed the inches moved

Z

  • Z is for zebra
  • an African wild horse with black-and-white stripes and a mane that sticks straight up
  • I saw a herd of zebras at the zoo
