  • Somali had a lot of hijacking of ships
  • Hundreds of ships have been stolen since 1980s
  • Since 2012 there has only been 1 successful hijacking

Current Issues

  • MV MARZOOQAH- most current successful hijacked ship
  • Merchant ship in the Red Sea 
  • Has been taken south towards Somali waters
  • Sent a distress signal from the Red Sea 
  • Was then turned towards the Gulf of Aden

Solutions

  • The number of attacks by Somali pirates dropped in 2013
  • This is due to the large effort of an international naval 
  • No ships have been successfully hijacked since
  • Problems will remain as long as gangs are not banned from land
  • Current stability after 20+ years of chaos has raised hope
